Elvas Plums are in fact greengages that have been grown for centuries in the Elvas region of Alentejo. They have an amazing sweet flavour, are incredibly fragrant and beautifully juicy. Harvested in July, the fruit is cooked and soaked in sugar for six weeks, then washed and sun-dried.
They were first introduced to Britain by the Port importers and also brought inspiration to Tchaikovsky when writing the Nutcracker Suite - the Sugar Plum Fairy was so named after these wonderful Portuguese plums. Capturing the essence of the festive spirit, these are the ideal Christmas treat, taking pride of place on the sweet and stickies tray!
